No. 513

This letter was addressed to R. Nissan Nemenov, the mashpia of the Lubavitcher Yeshivah in Paris.
B"H, 3 Menachem Av, 5709

Greetings and blessings,

I received your letter from Rosh Chodesh Menachem Av. I gave 117 to nifneh[583]....

May G-d transform these days into happiness and joy, with greater power and strength. As is known, this is the reason why on the fifteenth — the day of the full moon — of Av, “there were no festivals [that surpassed....]”[584]

With wishes for everlasting good in all matters and with greetings to all those who seek our welfare,

M. Schneerson

R. Moshe Dubinsky lent me his Tanya. In the margins are several references and notes. He told me that I would be able to find out from you the name of the person who wrote those references and notes. I would be grateful if you would answer me speedily concerning this.

Notes:

  1. (Back to text) [The term nifneh was a chassidic code to refer to maamad, money given to the Rebbe by chassidim to support his household needs and distribute to others at his discretion.]

  2. (Back to text) [See the final mishnah in tractate Taanis, which states that the celebrations of the fifteenth of Av surpassed those of all other festivals. See Sefer HaMaamarim 5670, p. 218, which explains that the fifteenth day of every month is unique because it represents a full moon, manifesting the pattern of descent for the sake of ascent. The fifteenth of Av is unique, however. Since the descent in the month of Av (i.e., Tishah BeAv) is greater than any other month, the ascent is correspondingly greater.]
