No. 277

This letter was addressed to R. Meir Ashkenazi in connection with the printing of texts of Chassidus in Shanghai.
B"H, 8 Menachem Av, 5707

Greetings and blessings,

I was in Europe for several months and therefore the response to your letter was delayed. I ask your forgiveness.

  1. Enclosed is a letter of thanks and inspiration with regard to the printing project and [hence] I will not repeat [my comments] here with one exception: a request for the future. Would it please be possible for your agents and the like to collect more and to add to what you have already collected for the sake of printing? Certainly there is no need to elaborate on the great necessity for this. In particular, this is true because my revered father-in-law, the Rebbe Shlita, forcefully calls for an expansion of the printing and circulation [of our texts] to far broader [frontiers].

  2. With regard to [sending] a shochet to your community: I spoke about the matter with my revered father-in-law, the Rebbe Shlita, several times. It has now been clarified that the ones whom we originally thought about are not able to make the journey. According to his directive, the Committee for Refugees wrote to Europe about this matter. When we will have information about this matter, we will inform you.

  3. It would be very desirable if you could send here a sum [of money] for the purpose of printing or for Merkos L'Inyonei Chinuch in general, for here that department is in very pressing financial straits.

  4. Certainly you have already sent the texts you printed [to Brooklyn], leaving some copies in your possession to disseminate in your community and country.

  5. As you requested, and as is our custom with regard to those who assist in our efforts, we have sent you a gift of the texts recently printed here: Sefer HaSichos [of the Rebbe Rashab] and the biography [of the Rebbe Maharash]. Similarly, if you feel that it is necessary, we will send another five copies of each for the purpose of sale by your agents or to distribute for free. Please inform us if we should do so in the future and the number of copies to send. How many copies of the texts [published] in English should be sent for HaYehudi HaTza'ir?[186]

  6. Why has the connection between Merkos L'Inyonei Chinuch and HaYehudi HaTza'ir ceased in your community?

Concluding with the wish that very speedily, these days [of Av] will be transformed into [days of] gladness and joy.

Rabbi Menachem Schneerson
