This letter was addressed to R. Shalom Mendel Kalmenson, one of the active members of the group of Lubavitch refugees who escaped from Russia after WWII.B"H, 28 Menachem Av, 5708Greetings and blessings,
You are certainly already aware of our efforts to print [texts of Chassidus that are being conducted] by R. David Bravman. There are impediments to the work there. It appears that the fundamental reasons for the impediments are that it is impossible to borrow financial resources there and also there is difficulty in shipping the books which are printed from there. Yesterday, when I was in the room of my revered father-in-law, the Rebbe Shlita, he told me that you will be able to receive at least a transit visa through [Poking.[424] Hence,] if it does not conflict at all with your journey to Ireland,[425] it would be proper for you to travel there at an early opportunity. Take $1000 (I have already requested that R. Nissan Nemanov give you that amount from funds belonging to us) and together with R. David Bravman hurry the matters to the greatest degree. In order to expedite matters, it is not necessary for R. David Bravman to have the books bound in hardcover; a paper cover, like that used for Sifreinu, is sufficient. You should also endeavor to hurry the shipment of texts from there through people traveling to France and [then] from France to here or directly from there to here. Rely on your own judgment in that regard.
The remainder of the money needing for the printing expenses is also at hand. Nevertheless, the desire of my revered father-in-law, the Rebbe Shlita, was not to take more than the above sum at one time. You may learn more particulars concerning the status of our printing project from R. Nissan Nemanov or R. Ben Tzion Shemtov. Please notify me immediately concerning your involvement in the above. It is obvious that I am responsible to pay for all the related expenses from here.
Awaiting to hear good news from you concerning the above,
Rabbi Menachem SchneersonNotes:
