No. 450

This letter was addressed to the philanthropist R. Tzvi Eliezer ben R. Avraham Avir Kreizhour.
B"H, 18 Shvat, 5709

Greetings and blessings,

In the name of Merkos L’Inyonei Chinuch and in my own name, I would like to extend heartfelt thanks for the warm welcome which you and your worthy wife awarded our esteemed colleague, R. Shlomo Aharon Kazarnovsky. No less do we extend our thanks for your valuable assistance in your continued undertaking of the costs of printing the highly regarded encyclopedia of [halachic] literature, Sdei Chemed, by R. Chayim Chizkiyahu Medini. Enclosed is a formal receipt.

It is superfluous to write about the importance of the text and the great merit that my revered father-in-law, the Lubavitcher Rebbe Shlita, has bestowed upon you after I have already emphasized the fundamental importance [of such a project] in my previous letter.[243] [Now,] I want merely to note that the printing of the text came at the initiative of my revered father-in-law, the Rebbe Shlita. [In so doing,] I want to emphasize the two-pronged approach of the work of my father-in-law, Shlita, which combines the deepest philosophical knowledge of the Torah and chassidic thought with a Jew’s day-to-day life.

We find this same principle in the Torah in general, and in particular in the Ten Commandments, which we study in the Torah portion of the coming week.

The Ten Commandments begin with the word Anochi, which alludes to the deepest concepts concerning G-dliness, [His] unity, Divine providence, and faith in general, and conclude with readily understandable mitzvos like honoring one’s parents, not to murder, not to steal, etc. This shows that our faith is not an abstract matter only for [lofty] thinkers and philosophers. On the contrary, it descends into [matters of] daily life.

[In that vein,] my revered father-in-law, the Rebbe Shlita, seeks to publish texts, not only concerning ideas of deep philosophy, but also texts like the Sdei Chemed which contain halachic rulings concerning the day-to-day experiences of a Jew.

We wish that the merit of printing this important text will bring you, your worthy wife, and son continued blessings in your daily life with all types of good in both material and spiritual matters.

With blessings for everlasting good in all matters,

Rabbi Menachem Schneerson
Chairman of the Executive Committee
