This letter was addressed to R. Avraham Eliyahu Axelrod, an active communal Rabbi in Baltimore.B"H, 9 Adar, 5709Greetings and blessings,
In response to your letter: All in all, $325 was received on behalf of R. Shlomo Chayim [Kesselman]. We notified him [of the matter] at that time.
Enclosed is the kuntreis for Purim. It is being sent with the intent that it be shared with people at large.
I would again like to stir you with regard to the importance of making appeals in your community on behalf of Merkos L’Inyonei Chinuch which presently finds itself in a trying [financial] situation. Or, at the very least, Merkos L’Inyonei Chinuch should be part of [another] appeal (if there is not a free day [for its own appeal]) and [receive] a significant percentage. The days of Nissan are appropriate for such matters. It is obvious that this is in addition to efforts made regarding private individuals for donations or for the publication [of books].
Certainly, in Baltimore, there is a Federation or other bodies that can be influenced to allot support for Merkos L’Inyonei Chinuch. They certainly should notice that we are not sending fundraisers to Baltimore. Ultimately, we will be forced to do this. If so, why should [the Federation] cause extra expenses? Elaboration to a person such as yourself is unnecessary. You will undoubtedly do everything you can. Based on the letter printed in the enclosed kuntreis,[283] your words will be heeded and you will be successful. And you will notify [us], in a good and auspicious hour, of concrete activities. For the essential thing is the deed.
Concluding with wishes for everlasting good in all matters,
Rabbi Menachem SchneersonNotes:
