B"H, 9 Sivan, 5709

Greetings and blessings,

According to our telephone conversation yesterday, we have today — upon your request — placed a temporary hold on payment of the check.

Since before Shavuos we had already promised to pay the printer, we are negotiating with him to wait on the basis of your promise that within ten days I will have heard favorable news from you. I want to be certain that, with G-d’s help, you will keep your pledge so that our work will not, Heaven forbid, have to be stopped in the middle.

It is unnecessary to remind you of our Sages’ interpretation (Taanis 9a) [of the phrase]:[397] “You shall surely tithe” as implying “Tithe, so that you will become wealthy.” This means that when a Jew gives tzedakah, it serves as a source and a medium [through which he receives his] livelihood. This can be seen overtly in recent times, as my revered father-in-law, the Rebbe Shlita, creates opportunities for you to earn a livelihood. And, moreover, [he gives you] a good medium, i.e., tzedakah, through which [these blessings] can be received as indicated by our Sages’ statement cited above. Accordingly, it is very surprising why you postpone a good thing. After all, you are a businessman and you understand when there is a good deal. I don’t have to elaborate further.

I hope that you and your entire household are in the best of health. May G-d give you the opportunity to merit that the blessings that my revered father-in-law, the Rebbe Shlita, [gave you] will be fulfilled.

With greetings and with blessings for everlasting good in all matters,

Rabbi Menachem Schneerson
Chairman of the Executive Committee

  1. (Back to text) [Devarim 14:22. The interpretation depends on the similarity between the root aser, “tithe,” and osher, “wealth.”]
