This letter was sent to R. Moshe Menuchin, the father of the world famous violinist, Yehudi MenuchinB"H, 26 Nissan, 5710Greetings and blessings,
In response to your letter in which you ask particulars about the branch [of the Schneerson family] that relates to you. To the extent of my knowledge, the following is the list of your genealogy.[365] Due to the preoccupations of the Pesach holiday, my response was delayed until the present.
Moshe Menuchin:
- His father: Yitzchak Isaac Menuchin.
- His mother: Sarah Liba.
- Her father: Shneur Zalmanson.
- Her mother: Perla Devorah.
- [Perla Devorah's] father: [The Rebbe,] Admur R. Yisrael Noach Schneersohn, the Rebbe of Nezhin.
- Her mother: Freida, the daughter of Rebbetzin Beila, the daughter of the Mitteler Rebbe.
[The Rebbe,] Admur R. Yisrael Noach Schneersohn, the Rebbe of Nezhin.
Your grandmother, Perla Devorah, was the sister of R. Avraham Schneersohn, who was the father of my mother-in-law, the Rebbetzin, Nechamah Dinah, the wife of my revered father-in-law, the Rebbe, hk"m.
- His father: [The Rebbe,] Admur R. Menachem Mendel Schneersohn, the author of [the responsa] Tzemach Tzedek, the son of Devorah Leah, the daughter of the Alter Rebbe, the author of the Tanya and the Shulchan Aruch.
- His mother: the Rebbetzin Chaya Mushka, the daughter of the Mitteler Rebbe, the son of the Alter Rebbe.
Your grandmother lived in Lubavitch. Your journey to Lubavitch in your childhood was apparently to visit your grandparents whose name was Zalmanson, not Schneersohn. From the above, it appears that your connection to the Schneersohn family is from your grandmother, Perla Devorah.
You have certainly heard about the passing of my revered father-in-law, the Rebbe, hk"m. The feelings of responsibility shared by all the members of the family are greater than they were previously, because to a certain extent, the work [required of us] is more difficult than before. It is self-understood that all the members of the family, both on the paternal side and the maternal side, must add strength and energy in doing their part to bring about the realization of the goal, intent, and lifestyle of the founders of the family and those who bore its standard from generation to generation.
With wishes for all forms of everlasting good,
Rabbi Menachem SchneersonNotes:
